York Story Slam

York Story Slam is a monthly gathering where anyone can take a turn at the microphone and tell a TRUE story based on that month's theme. Learn more and see upcoming themes at yorkstoryslam.com.

Our series is part of the growing regional offering of open mic story slam events that began with West Chester Story Slam in 2010 and grew to include Delco Story Slam, our sister series Lancaster Story Slam, Harrisburg Story Slam, and Shippensburg Story Slam. If you're a fan of The Moth, NPR's This American Life, or Philadelphia's First Person Arts Story Slam, you're going to love having this monthly event on your calendar.

York Story Slam live events take place in downtown York on the third Tuesday of the month at 7 pm. Join us to listen and perhaps share your own story.

You can come and simply listen to other people tell stories, or you can sign up to tell your own story. Storytellers register upon arrival and we'll draw 10 names from a hat to tell their stories according to the following rules:

  • Story should reflect the theme of that evening

  • Story should be true to the best of your recollection

  • Should be your story - you are the/a central character

  • Story should be about five minutes long

  • No notes, no props - just you and the microphone

Three judges are chosen from the audience and each storyteller is given scores based on content and presentation. We don’t take the competition part too seriously - it’s all about having a fun night together hearing each other's stories - but the storyteller with the top score at each event wins an exclusive York Story Slam journal set from our friends at Story Supply Co and earns a spot in our Grand Slam at the end of the season.

In addition to the live event, we'll post the stories to our YouTube channel and feature selected stories from each event in our monthly podcast (available for free wherever you get your podcasts). Storytellers must sign a release granting us permission to post their performance in order to participate; they retain all rights to their stories.

Have fun. Maybe learn something. Find your people.

Tinfoil Hat Club

Connect the Dots. Ignore the Facts.

Welcome to Tinfoil Hat Club, where curiosity runs wild, logic takes a smoke break, and every presenter is answering the questions they don’t want you to ask.

Our speakers will take the stage to share their favorite conspiracy theories — the harmless, the hilarious, the “wait… what?” variety. Some are oddly convincing. Some are clearly nonsense. All are presented with slides, confidence, and just enough evidence to make you squint at the ceiling.

Upon arrival, audience members will be provided with materials to craft their very own tinfoil hat. Is it for fun? For fashion? For protection? We’re not saying. But we are saying it’s encouraged.

Hosted by The Hangar, this is not a debate night, a lecture, or an attempt to convert you to anything. It’s a playful exploration of the stories we tell ourselves when the official explanation just isn’t interesting enough.

Skepticism welcome. Fact-checking prohibited. Paranoia strictly theatrical.

📅 Date: March 20, 2026, 7 pm (doors at 6:30)

📍 Location: The Hangar at The Grotto Community Center - 17 E Philadelphia St. York PA 17401

🎟 Cover Charge for Attendees: [$10 advance/$15 door]

🍽️ Food and drink available for purchase.

Come for the theories. Stay for the hats. Leave wondering who’s really in charge.

Slideshow Roulette

Slideshow Roulette

Prepared slides. Unprepared Presenters.

Welcome to Slideshow Roulette, where preparation meets fate and confidence is optional.

In this spin-off of the Hangar’s Slide Deck Series, speakers arrive having created a full PowerPoint presentation…for someone else. When it’s time to present, each speaker is randomly assigned a slide deck made by another participant — and must present it live, sight unseen.

They don’t know the topic.

They didn’t write any jokes.

They definitely didn’t choose that chart.

What follows is part improv, part storytelling, and part watching someone realize, in real time, that Slide 7 exists.

Hosted by The Hangar, this event is not about expertise or accuracy. It’s about thinking on your feet, committing to the bit, and pretending the slide you just saw was absolutely part of your plan.

Cheering encouraged. Heckling light and loving. Questions allowed, answers invented.

Come watch smart people make bold claims they didn’t plan for, defend arguments they don’t understand, and somehow stick the landing anyway.

📅 Date: April 17, 2026, 7 pm (doors at 6:30)

Indoctrination Night

Indoctrination Night

Free will surrendered. Loyalty mandatory.

Welcome to Indoctrination Night, where belief systems are built in under ten minutes and commitment lasts exactly as long as the applause.

In this Slide Deck Series spin-off, presenters take the stage to make the case for a cult they’ve invented. Using slides, confidence, and deeply questionable logic, each speaker will attempt to convince the audience that their group is the one worth joining.

Upon arrival, every attendee receives a single voting token. At the end of the night, you’ll cast your vote for the cult you would most willingly join, the cult leader you’d most ardently follow off a cliff. No contracts. No chanting required. Probably.

Some cults will promise purpose.

Some will offer snacks.

All will be extremely well-branded.

Hosted by The Hangar, Indoctrination Night is not about real belief, persuasion, or actual recruitment. It’s a satirical showdown of rhetoric, aesthetics, and wildly overconfident PowerPoint design.

Come witness the art of the pitch, the power of the slide deck, and how easily anyone can sound convincing with the right font choice and a little charisma.

📅 Date: May 15, 2026, 7 pm (doors at 6:30)

HR Nightmare

Let’s circle back. Action items pending.

Welcome to HR Nightmare, where speakers take the stage as if they’re presenting at the biggest meeting of their careers - bosses watching, executives judging, jobs on the line. The catch? They haven’t seen the slides ahead of time.

Charts will appear.

Buzzwords will surface.

Decisions will be made with total confidence and absolutely no preparation.

Speakers must explain, defend, and passionately stand behind whatever appears onscreen - even when it contradicts the previous slide, undermines their argument, or introduces a pie chart no one asked for.

At the end of the night, the audience votes on who gets fired and who earns a promotion. (All firings are fictional. All humiliation is real.)

Hosted by The Hangar, this event isn’t about leadership strategies, best practices, or KPIs. It’s about office politics, meetings that could have been emails, and the universal fear of being asked to “walk us through this slide.”
